We read the fairy tale, while glowing coals% J h5 D8 x8 O6 F* G+ @
Builded its pictures. There before our eyes7 }0 A% G0 f/ y! s2 V1 G
We saw the vaulted hall of traceried stone$ a# @, l9 v$ S! S
Uprear itself, the distant ceiling hung
! m- {9 D4 | g With pendent stalactites like frozen vines;4 l2 N! I, s6 M) W; A2 }
And all along the walls at intervals,' E% g8 K8 P& S' V) c
Curled upwards into pillars, roses climbed,+ I, ^, ~4 b* E; ~. w; q ~
And ramped and were confined, and clustered leaves
/ M4 F- s1 C" F2 V Divided where there peered a laughing face.
# r) R) ?1 ?: N! D4 t2 ? The foliage seemed to rustle in the wind,7 O% P; z! S! q) h
A silent murmur, carved in still, gray stone.4 I) E' r/ s" B$ H& v
High pointed windows pierced the southern wall$ }. l: X% H; e/ B& ]. F2 B
Whence proud escutcheons flung prismatic fires1 I; j, W* {7 |( n+ E7 }1 Z
To stain the tessellated marble floor9 E, y1 X% E0 M% v F8 E" i
With pools of red, and quivering green, and blue;5 ~! p \) I5 X7 i$ ^5 u
And in the shade beyond the further door,
7 l! o! J5 A- {, M3 v Its sober squares of black and white were hid; b0 M) U5 p# w+ c7 d
Beneath a restless, shuffling, wide-eyed mob) b f- o! F6 o H" \/ \) a
Of lackeys and retainers come to view

A sudden blare of trumpets, and the throng+ f n, p0 T& w" w1 S2 s
About the entrance parted as the guests
" j$ |( n0 n3 x5 B Filed singly in with rare and precious gifts.
& t f' T( d; ^. R, { Our eager fancies noted all they brought,
& G* C" |5 b- z0 |4 ?$ q0 j2 f The glorious, unattainable delights!) c% |( b# b9 ?+ @ p
But always there was one unbidden guest8 C; l! f W# F' t7 [* M1 m: U
Who cursed the child and left it bitterness.. O* ^' ]" O5 J Z% y: B e/ C& v
The fire falls asunder, all is changed,7 o' |6 e8 L+ C; ?
I am no more a child, and what I see
0 m+ u) M; ?! f1 M0 G6 b' S: F5 T Is not a fairy tale, but life, my life.3 h) n5 _* u* L. V4 F9 x9 c
1 O& B+ N; N1 g$ \' M3 T' y9 A! j: S
The gifts are there, the many pleasant things:- P2 [4 s2 z+ |; s
Health, wealth, long-settled friendships, with a name2 B, J3 g- [1 Q' Q' r' n, _; E
Which honors all who bear it, and the power" S& P( j# p" F' i) o2 I: x1 Y
Of making words obedient. This is much;
. O( Q6 _( [$ m A But overshadowing all is still the curse,3 h. o7 m- m: d. |( \- i
That never shall I be fulfilled by love!0 k2 k: ^, R. c+ p. t+ u8 d H
Along the parching highroad of the world d, l: X) g, g: n1 n# f
No other soul shall bear mine company.
/ m$ c3 }+ z3 R' Q, r Always shall I be teased with semblances,
) U# y+ h2 D; u# \! w2 `8 |! k With cruel impostures, which I trust awhile
! _! w( [# R J. [2 i' @( p Then dash to pieces, as a careless boy
' ]$ o$ y$ T- j5 H/ o Flings a kaleidoscope, which shattering

So I behold my visions on the ground

Of broken, dusty glass. And so, unlit,5 Y/ w! G# H$ v/ C9 z: r
Even by hope or faith, my dragging steps) d5 \6 w7 f) z8 b- I# o' L4 A0 V
Force me forever through the passing days." s2 u1 \; S" l( ~6 n% G& u1 @
