　　at the end of the street
　　bare trees black railing
　　an eastern star set like a pearl atop a steeple
　　that shadows the doorway

　　shuffling his deck on a milk crate
# l2 |1 x/ m1 r+ x　　waiting for the No. 6 bus to discharge
! Q1 A0 r9 m- ?8 n7 b　　the off-duty cop the seamstress
( U2 X7 Q' r/ g; b& B1 q# O　　the drunken mechanic and the clerk on crutches
　　who pauses before his building to watch
/ a- E6 x' v. H& ]9 T6 b　　the mechanic lose three dollars at blackjack
; Y7 \$ Y* S( G" h9 |, n　　and then stiffly ascends the five flights
　　to his two rooms on a shaftway
* `& Y- r( P2 {& K) ?( }7 G$ @% E　　hanging his coat on a hook
  t& z% t  j0 n) ]+ h" l: o8 X; d　　and sitting down at the table
* V! L! e0 `" s& F3 K& V- [　　on which this morning he placed

  d# a3 z) p6 L9 ], k　　a tin of crackers and the crossword
　　puzzle he had been laboring over

　　her color photograph propped up in a small frame
　　a young woman in a boxy dress and felt cap
　　waving shyly by the edge of a lake

% q8 r* {( H/ c% @" B+ }　　a sailboat rides the wind
0 i. m9 n0 D; ^: |! \　　passengers on the polished deck
3 }* U9 `6 b" J1 o9 e6 m0 [　　gazing at the glowing mountain peaks
5 ~. F) S/ s( b  L+ e; ]* M- W8 }　　the cypresses lining the shore
　　and the pink palazzi with ancient gardens
4 x4 v5 F! F7 V　　these men and women in white
　　who seem to live upon the water
4 M- m  j  D2 V; i2 {　　gliding among themselves oblivious to strife
　　and all else that wears a body down
　　some sipping from crystal goblets
9 U; [1 Y% }6 B  [- b- f- F　　others just drinking in the light
