We saw the vaulted hall of traceried stone

High pointed windows pierced the southern wall8 M3 \ G' |) f' x) S6 ~
Whence proud escutcheons flung prismatic fires5 t. u2 O- Z2 q
To stain the tessellated marble floor

And in the shade beyond the further door,

A sudden blare of trumpets, and the throng$ G+ y! x; }. c w2 T; B
About the entrance parted as the guests# w7 v" Y% |/ e P, O3 x
Filed singly in with rare and precious gifts.$ d0 g: z* M7 F( g( u/ z& k6 a
Our eager fancies noted all they brought,. n9 M* u2 s0 }) ]+ _% |
The glorious, unattainable delights!6 [, P# X: ] t ^
But always there was one unbidden guest# O. Q+ S: [& I: s- V2 L
Who cursed the child and left it bitterness.
: B& |9 o: L: F* F6 A The fire falls asunder, all is changed,
0 I# ?: c5 W. m. O4 @5 Q* r G. @ I am no more a child, and what I see
5 {0 A. C. G+ H Is not a fairy tale, but life, my life.

Of making words obedient. This is much;

That never shall I be fulfilled by love!6 J, ?: F# ^# Q
Along the parching highroad of the world" [8 A+ ]3 T) e( D7 K( H6 u' ]
No other soul shall bear mine company.; C# x0 v4 S8 S* k0 v/ y2 [
Always shall I be teased with semblances,
: ~ L# Q; i0 R' P With cruel impostures, which I trust awhile
9 v' _; K0 U" r' {. o3 ^' \ Then dash to pieces, as a careless boy
- F6 C" `) g% M5 ]' G e Flings a kaleidoscope, which shattering
" t* F) B. o3 V N3 H& { Strews all the ground about with coloured sherds.& [% y4 o0 s1 {! G' B
So I behold my visions on the ground
, X- U( F9 T. _' d! a0 G No longer radiant, an ignoble heap5 M; I2 V- u1 }3 W2 `! e# [, {
Of broken, dusty glass. And so, unlit,% i4 i2 P; i9 Q. U
Even by hope or faith, my dragging steps+ u Z& ^9 E y7 f: T( Q& {
Force me forever through the passing days.
